GUEST POST

Neighborhood Housing Services of Birmingham

April 2, 2020

From Kelleigh Gamble, NHS CEO

Neighborhood Housing Services of Birmingham is a community redevelopment organization whose mission is to make investments in real estate and people to create communities of choice. The nexus of that mission comes together under our Healthy Housing Initiative where we conduct owner-occupied rehabilitation for our neighbors in traditionally underserved communities.

While our service area includes Jefferson County proper; our efforts have been concentrated in redeveloping communities whose aging population is potentially at risk for displacement due to deferred maintenance and affordability of major system repairs.

NHS Birmingham in partnership with Navigate through the HAT has been able to assist existing homeowners with the quality of life repairs to their homes. Roofing, HVAC, Plumbing, and Weatherization are the most conducted repairs that our organization provides.

Investments in redeveloping communities begin to build a sense of pride in the communities we serve. It also attracts additional partners to the neighborhood. With Navigate as our partner, NHS Birmingham has leveraged HAT Funds to attract partners such as Well Fargo, Mike and Gillian Goodrich Foundation, The City of Birmingham, Titusville Development Corporation, and Alabama Power.

Resources to allow for existing residents to age in place are highly valued for local nonprofits to responsibly deploy. NHS Birmingham intends to extend our partnership with Navigate and the Housing Affordability Trust to continue move our communities forward.
